Paralympic Torch Relay – Light a Lantern

Over the August bank holiday, Flames from our four nations’ capitals will travel to Stoke Mandeville, where the Paralympic Games were born. On 28 August, they’ll join to create the Paralympic Flame. This Flame will then travel through the night from Stoke Mandeville to the Paralympic Opening Ceremony in London.

Light a Lantern Event
Merton Council will be hosting a ‘Light a Lantern’ evening at South Park Gardens, SW19 to celebrate the opening of the Paralympics.

Join them in South Park Gardens to display and illuminate your lantern to light the way to the Paralympic Games. Bring along your handmade or bought lanterns and help us to create a display in the centre of South Park Gardens.

At 8pm we will send a signal to the Paralympic athletes by lighting our lanterns in line with the flame being lit at Stoke Mandeville. All lanterns will be lit using hand-held torches and not candles.
